Flowes Store VFD

The Flowes Store Volunteer Fire Department was organized at a meeting on February 16, 1962. On that night there were 28 charter members. The department was incorporated on March 8, 1962. The department was to cover an area between Jackson Park VFD, Midland VFD, and Allen VFD. The first Chief of the department was Oscar Black.

The first truck was delivered July 21, 1962. It was a 1959 V-8 Dodge. The truck was purchased from Humble Oil & Refining Co. of Charlotte. The truck was equipped as a fire truck by the Baker Equipment Co. of Charlotte for a price of $5665.00. The next truck described at the time as a “water wagon” was purchased on December 3, 1962, and a “brush truck” for fighting brush and grass fires was bought in 1974.

The new station building would be constructed near Bost’s Gin, in the Flowes Store Community. A building committee was appointed to plan for the department structure. It was built in 1962 as a simple 30’ x 52’ concrete building with a gravel floor and the capability of housing three trucks with 1 door for personnel. The first building still stands today but it has been modified many times. The left three bays of the current station are the original three bays.

The district still remains a rural area today; however, the population is growing with the building of a several neighborhoods. The department set a record in 2008 for running 525 calls and has consistently ran around 500 calls since then.  In 2010, the department took delivery of a new Seagrave Rescue Engine (Engine 2).
